Activists
We are the world-wide grab-bag of boat-rockers, neck-sticker-outers, city-hall-fighters, tree-huggers, community-builders, movement-makers, organizers, agitators, rabble-rousers, arguers, word-flingers and art-makers struggling to create a just and compassionate world. Some of us call ourselves revolutionaries, radicals, rebels, dissidents. We may identify with particular ideologies, and these may put us at odds with one another, (not to mention with the ideologies underpinning the dominant social structure).
What is common among us is that we venture beyond our private lives to struggle alongside our peers for justice, equality, human rights and a good life for all.
Most of us focus on certain issues, constituencies and parts of the world, we believe that the above principles apply to everyone equally, and that no one is “more equal than others.”
We are a varied bunch, under a wide tent, but focusing on a certain aspect does not mean feeling that your people are better or more deserving or, especially, that they have the right to excluding other people Hence, this concept of activists excludes the exclusionary–those who fight for the interests of their group only, at the expense of others whom they feel entitled to repress, dispossess, marginalize and exploit.
In the belly of the beast our principles and our practice are in constant tension, but we are always reaching to open and expand the liberated zones where we can be the change we want to see,
